Even leisure can be a to-do list:
___ get out in nature,
___ bathe,
___ relax!!!!
___ pet the cat,
___ listen to the owl,
___ go to yoga,
___ sit silently for x amount of minutes,
___ eat nutritious food,
but true letting go hammers no list.
Health comes in its own time with no terms.
Music is found under layers of clutter, cleared away.
No one was actually keeping score.
The list keeper is happy to turn the reigns over,
as long as she is
convinced
converted
at last
by the magic mother once again –
she is stunned into silence by a something larger
that she cannot understand.
She is silenced finally in
open space full of nothing
no appointment
no calls to make
no bills to pay
no food to eat
no person expecting…anything.
How many years does it take to clear space like this?
Many and none –
a miracle
this island
in the middle of doing
always existing, almost invisible
right here
a chair
a breeze
an open ear
without a ready response
no sizing up
no plan
no worry
houses lost
clothes outgrown
a trillion cicadas clacking, mating and dying
while this body learned to have no clock
learned that needs will make themselves known
without having to cry –
a baby again
in the arms of such a large mother
as I can be to myself.
No other task was ever more important;
no job was ever asked.
Why does it take a lifetime to remember again how to get lost? As always, thanks for your clarity and for the quiet beauty of your writing.
Seems whenever I am left on my own for a few days, I find this place again…now how to remember through the rumble tumble when the others return! Maybe the distractions of existing keep us so busy in this lifetime that you mention, no time for getting lost, or found 🙂 xo!
“…no job was ever asked.” sigh. Marga, you will never be a fortune 500 A-lister… thank you. 😀
xx Meredith
sighing back at you – I’m grateful to have missed that ride! 🙂 xo!
high maintenance rides are just… tiresome. 😀
seems so evident…now, but back in the day, I was flagging it down. No, not the fortune 500 train, but many other high maintenance roller coasters – whew – glad I left the amusement park and headed out into the wild where we can now have tea in your garden 🙂 xo!
Sigh. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.

so fun to be remembering together, isn’t it?! xo! marga
Truly excellent work Marga, for which many thanks. All we have to do now [ 😉 ] is remember where the bloody list is. Ah, growing old, what fun it is. H ❤
How did you know that all this verbiage is just a smokescreen to hide the fact that I misplaced my to do list? 🙂 Want to join me in a game of hide and seek of the reading glasses? xo! m
Will do Marga; I’ve just got to nip upstairs and forget why I did first.
Discovering this was perfect today, M. It brought me back from a strange uncertainty. I think it is the way your lines remind me of the familiar, that I had temporarily misplaced. One moment, I’m hiding behind the rock, reloading, spinning to my feet to fire a few shots across the ravine where seconds ago I saw drifting puffs of smoke and dust. Then… an opening. I’m walking out into the open, out from cover towards an answer I’ve been on the verge of chatting with for a hundred centuries. Am I invulnerable now, or just past all that other? The cameras are still rolling… the director of the film is shrieking… his lists are flying in the wind and scattering… A nearby horse tells him to take a chill pill…
How to reconcile these strange zero-distance journeys with the other ones… How to tell the list keeper to stick around… just stop making lists for a while… 🙂
Michael
Oh, yes. That director is pulling her hair out over me, too – We are definitely off script and improvising into a whole new plot line, with talking horses and all. John Wayne meets Brazil is how I might pitch it. If it weren’t for you and a few zany costars who keep showing up, I might have mistaken awaken(ing) for delirium. Off script, off list, off under the coming blue moon – scene partner!
now i could use
such a list
especially
if i’d look
at it
from time to time 🙂
I have a feeling that no such list
is needed for your smiling calm:)
I love finding all my discarded lists
after they have lost their relevancy.
It gives me a window view into another me
pressed by chores long ago forgotten.
I send her a little love envelope into the past
to let her know it all works out 😉
